Family Denounces Manchester Synagogue Attacker as Police Say One Victim Was Likely Killed by Officer Gunfire

Counter-terror police have made three related arrests in an investigation into possible prior threats.

Overview

  • Police identified the attacker as 35-year-old Jihad al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent who was not on Prevent or security service records.
  • The assault occurred on Yom Kippur outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation, where the attacker rammed a car, wore a fake explosives belt, and stabbed worshippers before being shot dead by armed officers.
  • Greater Manchester Police said one of the two people who died, named as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, appears to have been fatally wounded by police gunfire, and another injured victim also suffered a gunshot wound.
  • The Independent Office for Police Conduct has opened a standard investigation after the fatal police shooting, and searches continued at an address in Prestwich linked to the suspect.
  • Three people — two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s — were arrested on terrorism offenses as investigators also examine whether threatening emails sent to former MP John Howell in 2012 are connected to the attacker.
