Family Backs Push to Name 'Bill Walton Way' as Cities Weigh Memorial Plans

City councils will next weigh the proposals through their standard review process.

Overview

  • Activist Shane Harris, joined by Bill Walton’s family, unveiled twin memorial proposals on Wednesday, which would have been Walton’s 73rd birthday.
  • One plan asks San Diego to designate the Park Boulevard stretch between Upas Street and Zoo Drive along Balboa Park as “Honorary Bill Walton Way,” a route he often cycled.
  • La Mesa is being asked to expand Walton’s 2003 Walk of Fame display and establish a “Bill Walton Square” or “Bill Walton Corner” near Helix High School.
  • Lori Walton publicly supported the effort, and Harris said formal submissions are being prepared for municipal consideration with no approvals granted yet.
  • Harris’s office says La Mesa will take up the item at a future council meeting, and San Diego councilmembers Sean Elo‑Rivera and Stephen Whitburn have discussed or signaled openness, while advocates also listed other potential sites tied to Walton such as Marston Hills Edge, 5505 Friars Road by the Mission Valley YMCA, the Colina del Sol Recreation Center, and the Mission Beach Courts.
