Family Backs Plan for 'Honorary Bill Walton Way' in San Diego and La Mesa Memorial for Bill Walton
The proposals will be submitted to city planning bodies for review.
Overview
- On Nov. 5, activist Shane Harris joined Walton’s family to unveil proposals to honor the late Hall of Famer in San Diego and La Mesa.
- The San Diego request seeks to designate Park Boulevard between Upas Street and Zoo Drive as “Honorary Bill Walton Way,” along the edge of Balboa Park where he often cycled.
- The La Mesa plan would expand Walton’s 2003 Walk of Fame display into a “Bill Walton Square” or “Bill Walton Corner” near Helix High School.
- Lori Walton endorsed the effort as supporters, including broadcaster Ted Leitner, praised Bill Walton’s long commitment to San Diego and community causes.
- Advocates will bring the measures to planning committees, with La Mesa officials indicating a council hearing is expected soon and San Diego councilmembers open to discussions.
