Falcon 9 Upper Stage Likely Struck Moon Near Einstein Crater

  • Early on Wednesday morning researchers calculated that a roughly 3.9-ton Falcon 9 upper stage hit the Moon near the Einstein crater at the predicted time but agencies have not yet released definitive before-and-after orbital images to confirm the strike.
  • The object is the upper stage from the 15 January 2025 Falcon 9 that carried two commercial landers and was predicted to impact at about 2.43 km/s, delivering roughly 11.4 gigajoules of energy and forming a crater estimated at about 27–30 meters across.
  • Ground-based teams in the Americas attempted live detection and public streams reported no clear, verifiable flash or dust plume, while the South Korean orbiter Danuri overflew the area and KARI says any imagery will be released only after review.
  • NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is scheduled to image the site before and after the event and those high-resolution comparisons are the primary means to confirm the impact and measure ejecta and crater dimensions.
