James Renner, one of the 16 Republicans accused of participating in a scheme in Michigan to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, has expressed regret and claims he was 'betrayed' by government officials.
Renner, a first-time elector, is the only defendant who has had his charges dropped after he agreed to cooperate with the investigation led by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Renner was a late substitute in the roster of electors in December 2020 and claims he 'knew nothing about the electoral process' and trusted those in authority.
Renner only realized his alleged wrongdoing after reading over testimony from the United States House’s probe into the Jan. 6 attack.
Separate probes into fake electors are also underway in Arizona and New Mexico, with key players such as former New York City Mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani also charged in the Georgia probe.
