FAIMA Survey Finds Systemic Failings Across India’s Medical Colleges

FAIMA will submit its nationwide report to regulators after finding limited uptake of the 2024 task force safeguards.

Overview

  • The FAIMA–RMS survey collected over 2,000 responses across more than 28 states and union territories, with 90.4% from government institutions.
  • Core training inputs lagged, with only 54.3% reporting regular teaching, 44.1% access to functional skills labs, and faculty adequacy at 68.8%.
  • Workplace pressures were pronounced as 73.9% cited excessive clerical load, 55.2% reported staff shortages, and 40.8% described a toxic environment.
  • Only half said stipends were paid on time and 29.5% reported fixed duty hours; 57.4% felt ready for independent practice despite 70.4% expressing moderate confidence in skills.
  • FAIMA urged the MoHFW and NMC to enforce corrective measures, will file the report with the NMC and NITI Aayog, noted difficulty securing meetings with NMC leadership, and received support from Maharashtra Central MARD.
