Fadnavis Virtually Lays Foundation for AWS Mumbai Data Centre, Kick-Starting $8.3 Billion Maharashtra Expansion

The ceremony begins a $8.3 billion buildout projected to add $15.3 billion to India’s GDP by 2030.

Overview

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis performed the virtual ground-breaking from his official residence, Varsha, for a new AWS data centre in Mumbai.
  • The project launches the first phase of AWS’s $8.3 billion investment in the state following an MoU signed at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year.
  • AWS estimates the programme will support an annual average of more than 81,300 full-time equivalent jobs in the data-centre supply chain through 2030.
  • Fadnavis highlighted eased approval timelines, simplified processes, and a dedicated state ‘war room’ set up to facilitate large investments.
  • The event also included the flag-off of India’s first ‘Think Big’ Mobile STEAM Lab for Mumbai students, and follows AWS’s prior $3.7 billion investment and existing regions in Mumbai (2016) and Hyderabad (2022).
