Overview
- The three structures were officially inaugurated and opened to traffic on Thursday, Oct 22, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presiding virtually and live screenings at the Sion, Vidyavihar and Goregaon sites.
- The rebuilt Sion railway overbridge replaces a 112‑year‑old unsafe span, was completed four months ahead of schedule, and removes intermediate pillars so Central Railway can lay the planned fifth and sixth lines between CSMT and Kurla under MUTP‑II.
- The Vidyavihar flyover links Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg to Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg across a 650‑metre corridor and is expected to cut peak cross‑suburb travel from about 30 minutes to roughly 10 minutes by providing direct road access to station platforms.
- The 1.26 km Goregaon‑Mulund Link Road flyover near Hotel Ratnagiri junction forms part of the wider GMLR corridor and is designed to let motorists bypass congested junctions in Goregaon East while connecting key surface roads to planned twin‑tunnel links.
- A naming dispute over the Vidyavihar bridge remains unresolved, with local Gaothan residents, a BJP MLA backing Captain Smit Machchhar and Shiv Sena (UBT) supporters proposing different names, and reports put the combined cost of the three projects at about Rs 538 crore though funding is split by component.
