Facebook Privacy Settlement Payments Begin Rolling Out to Millions

Payout sizes are modest, determined by months of use from a reduced net fund.

Overview

  • The settlement administrator says distributions began in early September and will continue for about 10 weeks, with email notices sent 3–4 days before payment.
  • Court filings show individual awards range from $4.89 to $38.36, with an average around $29, calculated by one allocation point per month of active account.
  • Eligible recipients are U.S. users who had Facebook accounts between May 24, 2007 and Dec. 22, 2022 and filed valid claims by the Aug. 25, 2023 deadline.
  • About 29 million claims were filed and roughly 18 million validated, with approximately $540–541 million available for distribution after fees and costs.
  • Payments are issued via the method selected on the claim—PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, ACH, prepaid card or check—with digital payouts going first and paper checks later.
