Facebook Privacy Settlement Payments Begin Reaching More Than 19 Million Users

Typical payouts are expected around $25 to $30, reflecting fees and a months-of-use formula.

The first round of payments to Facebook users who filed claims in a class action settlement began this month, according to the administrator.

  • Distributions started the week of Sept. 3 and will be sent in waves over roughly 10 weeks, or about 75 days, with email notices arriving three to four days beforehand.
  • Court filings confirm more than 19 million approved claimants from the class of U.S. users who filed by the Aug. 25, 2023 deadline.
  • After judge-approved allocations of about $180.5 million in attorneys’ fees, nearly $4 million in costs, and $120,000 for eight lead plaintiffs, roughly $540–541 million remains for class payments.
  • Individual amounts are calculated by allocation points equal to each month a user had a Facebook account between May 2007 and December 2022.
  • Most recipients selected digital payments via Venmo, PayPal or Zelle, with others receiving prepaid Mastercards, direct deposit or paper checks, and no additional information is required to get paid.
