Overview
- Beginning Sept. 29, Boeing and the FAA will alternate weeks issuing airworthiness certificates for select 737 MAX and 787 aircraft.
- The FAA said inspectors will intensify oversight of critical assembly steps, compliance with engineering requirements, and Boeing’s Safety Management System and safety culture.
- Boeing previously lost these certification privileges for the MAX in 2019 and the 787 in 2022, and the FAA said it will maintain direct and rigorous oversight.
- The Wall Street Journal reported the FAA may allow a lift in the MAX production cap to about 42 jets per month, a figure the agency has not confirmed.
- The decision coincided with Boeing announcing new orders from Turkish Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle and a rise in the company’s share price.
