Overview

  • The rule would replace the existing case-by-case waiver system with a unified authorization process for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations.
  • Drones would be limited to flights below 400 feet above ground, capped at 1,320 pounds and equipped with collision-avoidance and detect-and-avoid systems.
  • The FAA consulted the Department of Homeland Security to integrate measures addressing terrorism, espionage and smuggling threats.
  • The proposal targets rapid expansion across sectors such as package delivery, large-scale agriculture, infrastructure inspections and public safety missions.
  • Stakeholders have 60 days to submit feedback on the draft rule before the FAA finalizes it later this year.
