FAA Launches eVTOL Pilot Program as Joby and Archer Join

The initiative creates a supervised path for limited air taxi trials before full certification.

Overview

  • The eVTOL Integration Pilot Program will authorize at least five public‑private projects pairing manufacturers with state and local governments.
  • Use cases will include passenger service, cargo and logistics, emergency and medical support, longer‑range flights, and work on automation safety.
  • Applications are due December 11, 2025, with selected pilots potentially beginning in 2026 and running for up to three years.
  • Joby cited more than 40,000 miles of flight testing and progress to stage four of FAA type certification, with FAA pilot flight testing expected next year.
  • Archer said it plans to collaborate with U.S. airlines, including United, and interested cities under the program, as shares of both companies rose after the announcement.
