FAA Expands Grounding to MD-10 and DC-10 Types After UPS MD-11 Crash

The agency cites shared engine–pylon design features requiring inspections before affected jets can fly.

Overview

  • The Nov. 14 emergency directive extends the Nov. 8 order that sidelined MD-11s after UPS Flight 2976 crashed in Louisville.
  • AD 2025-23-53 applies to MD-10 freighters and multiple DC-10 variants, including KC-10A and KDC-10, due to structural similarities with the MD-11.
  • The FAA warns the condition could lead to a loss of continued safe flight and landing, and aircraft must complete inspections and any needed repairs before returning to service.
  • UPS and FedEx had already parked MD-11 fleets, and additional U.S.-registered aircraft affected include aerial firefighting DC-10s and jets operated by Omega Air, Orbis, and TAB Cargo.
  • The NTSB continues to investigate the left-hand engine and pylon detachment that preceded the crash, which killed three crew members and 11 people on the ground.
