FAA Clears United’s First Starlink-Equipped 737-800 for Passenger Service

The certification enables a wider fleet rollout once additional aircraft-specific approvals are obtained.

Overview

  • United says the certified 737-800 will begin flying with the service on Oct. 15 from Newark.
  • The FAA approved a supplemental type certificate for installation on the 737-800, marking the airline’s first mainline approval for the system.
  • United already operates Starlink on Embraer E175 regional jets and reports equipping more than half of that fleet, with installations progressing at roughly 50 aircraft per month.
  • The carrier plans to add the technology to more than 16 mainline and regional aircraft types but must secure further certifications for each model.
  • SpaceX’s low Earth orbit network comprises more than 7,600 satellites and offers speeds up to 250 Mbps, with access free for MileagePlus members.
