FAA Cites Controller Shortfalls as Flight Delays Climb on Day 20 of Shutdown

The agency is reducing arrival rates at busy facilities to preserve safety during a funding lapse that has left essential aviation workers unpaid.

Overview

  • FlightAware logged about 7,850 U.S. flight delays on Sunday and more than 1,000 delays by Monday morning.
  • The FAA attributed weekend slowdowns in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Newark to staffing issues and warned of possible delays in Las Vegas and Phoenix.
  • Airlines for America CEO Chris Sununu said conditions are slowly worsening, noting roughly 46 areas have hit staffing triggers, and he urged travelers to allow extra time.
  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the share of delays linked to controller shortages has risen to 53% from about 5% before the funding lapse.
  • Roughly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers are working without pay, and officials say throughput reductions are being used to maintain safety.
