FAA Begins Daytime Flight Reductions at 40 Major Airports, Triggering Hundreds of Cancellations

Officials call the move a safety step to ease strain on unpaid air traffic controllers.

Overview

  • The phased order starts with a 4% cut on Nov. 7 and is scheduled to rise to as much as 10% by Nov. 14, applied roughly from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • More than 800 flights were canceled Friday, according to FlightAware, after airlines preemptively trimmed schedules in line with FAA guidance.
  • American plans about 220 cancellations per day, Delta about 170 on Friday, and United fewer than 200 daily through the weekend, with refunds and rebooking offered.
  • Carriers say most long‑haul international services will operate, with cuts concentrated on domestic and regional routes at hubs including Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles and the New York area.
  • Cargo hubs in Memphis (FedEx) and Louisville (UPS) are included on the list, raising the risk of package delays as the reductions escalate into next week.
