F1 Imposes 25-Lap Tyre Limit for Qatar GP, Ensuring Two Pit Stops

Pirelli issued a Qatar-specific safety prescription after 2024 inspections found severe wear alongside structural fatigue at Lusail.

Overview

  • Each tyre set is capped at 25 laps across all sessions, with Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car mileage counting and laps to the grid, formation laps and post-flag laps excluded.
  • The 57-lap grand prix will require at least two pit stops, while the sprint distance can be completed on a single set under the new cap.
  • The decision was agreed by Pirelli, the FIA and Formula 1 in consultation with teams, and Pirelli will advise teams before the race how many laps remain on every set.
  • Pirelli brings the C1–C3 compounds for the sprint weekend, with an allocation of 2 hard, 4 medium and 6 soft sets per driver.
  • The precaution follows 2024 findings of heavy left-front wear and increased construction fatigue and is distinct from the 2023 kerb-related issue that was addressed with kerb and gravel changes; wider mandatory two-stop rules for 2026 remain under discussion and unapproved.
