Overview
- During the week of Oct. 5, an F-22 pilot launched from Edwards AFB, joined a YFQ-44A Fury in flight, and sent high-level tactical directives that the Fury’s onboard autonomy interpreted and executed in real time.
- The flight included dynamic maneuvers and simulated combat tasks carried out by the Fury without the pilot micromanaging each movement, demonstrating the manned–unmanned ‘airborne quarterback’ concept.
- Air Force test and program units from Edwards, Nellis and Hill AFBs participated in the event and will use the flight data to advance autonomy software, cockpit interfaces, integration testing and operational procedures.
- The test advances Increment 1 work for fielding the FQ-44 Fury and General Atomics’ FQ-42 Vengeance and supports the Air Force goal of fielding 500 CCAs by 2032 as it prepares for larger exercises like Emerald Flag.
- Key challenges remain for scaling the concept including single‑pilot workload in single-seat fighters, cockpit control designs, trust in autonomous behaviors, and logistics for deployment and sustainment.
