F-15E Gets APKWS II in Record Time After Live-Fire Tests

An urgent counter‑UAS demand drove Eglin testers to repurpose legacy launchers, building a new avionics link to move the weapon from trials to operational use within days.

Overview

  • Teams from the 96th Test Wing and 53rd Wing conducted integrated developmental and operational testing in May, including AGR-20F live fire at targets over land and water.
  • Within a week of the demonstrations, F-15E Strike Eagles carried the rockets on missions in a geographic combatant command’s area of responsibility.
  • Engineers solved a mounting obstacle with 1970s-era Triple Ejector Rack-9As and LAU-131 launchers that had been bound for the National Airpower Reservoir.
  • The effort included creating a new connection so the F-15E’s avionics could communicate with the APKWS II guidance kit, a capability that did not previously exist.
  • After the demos, the 53rd Wing and 96th Test Wing deployed Airmen to deliver equipment and provide flight and maintenance training to operational units.
