Overview
- Police say a 79-year-old American man was found unresponsive while snorkeling shortly before noon on Aug. 15 and was later pronounced dead despite CPR.
- A 74-year-old American woman became unresponsive while swimming in a freshwater lagoon around 2:30 p.m. the same day and died after resuscitation efforts.
- Passenger John Kopta recounted spotting the snorkeler motionless in shallow water and helping bring him ashore as lifeguards and EMTs attempted to revive him.
- Carnival said its lifeguards and medical team responded to both emergencies, and noted the guests were sailing separately on Mardi Gras and Carnival Elation.
