Eye Drops Pairing Pilocarpine and Diclofenac Improve Near Vision for Up to Two Years

Conference data from a single-center retrospective study show promising near-vision gains, prompting calls for larger randomized trials before broad use.

Overview

  • At the ESCRS meeting in Copenhagen, researchers reported that 766 presbyopia patients gained an average 3.45 Jaeger lines one hour after the first dose.
  • Formulations used fixed diclofenac with 1%, 2% or 3% pilocarpine given twice daily with an optional third dose, and benefits persisted with a median duration of 434 days.
  • In the 1% group, 99% read two or more extra lines, while 69% in the 2% group and 84% in the 3% group read three or more lines.
  • Side effects were mostly mild—temporary dim vision (32%), irritation (3.7%) and headache (3.8%)—with no discontinuations or serious events reported.
  • Independent experts highlighted the retrospective single-center design and urged multi-center, long-term randomized trials and ongoing safety monitoring before broad recommendation.
