Overview
- In a cohort of 79 surgical patients with a mean age of about 56, researchers measured SLIT2 in vitreous humor and plasma using a custom Meso Scale Discovery electrochemiluminescence assay.
- Lower SLIT2 in vitreous humor was linked to lower Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores and poorer immediate verbal recall.
- Higher SLIT2 in plasma was associated with lower global cognition scores on the MoCA, showing an opposite-direction pattern to the eye fluid.
- Vitreous humor contained up to seven times more SLIT2 than plasma, and levels in the two compartments did not correlate.
- The findings, now published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease after an ARVO presentation in May, remained significant after adjusting for demographics and health factors but are cross-sectional and need replication.
