Extreme Poverty Halved in Mexico City, Evalúa 2024 Finds

The city released results using an index that uniquely counts time availability as part of poverty.

Overview

  • Evalúa reports extreme poverty fell from 19% in 2018 to 9% in 2024, with about 850,000 residents leaving poverty in that span.
  • Income poverty declined to 37% from 48%, and unmet basic needs fell 8.2 points with strong gains in telecommunications and improvements in housing, health, social security and energy adequacy.
  • Inequality narrowed as the top 10% share of wealth dropped to 53% from 60% and the Gini index improved by seven points.
  • The MMIP measures income, unmet needs and time use, and 57% of residents are classified as facing time poverty, which officials say they are addressing through care systems and mobility projects such as Cablebuses and electrified transport.
  • Officials say roughly two million people receive local social supports, including 700,000 new beneficiaries this year via Ingreso Ciudadano Universal and Mercomuna, and the reported series covers 2018–2024.
