Extreme Heat Can Cut EV Range by Up to 44%, What Car? Road Test Finds

Independent trials in southern Spain saw three models fall well short of official claims.

Overview

  • What Car? drove a Citroen e-C3, Kia EV3 and Tesla Model 3 from Seville to Cordoba in temperatures ranging from 32°C to 44°C.
  • The Tesla Model 3 achieved 244 miles against a 436-mile claim, representing the largest shortfall at 44%.
  • The Kia EV3 reached 246 miles versus a 362-mile claim, a 32% drop, while the Citroen e-C3 managed 142 miles against 199 claimed, a 29% gap.
  • Across the three vehicles, ranges averaged 35% below official figures, which the magazine said was worse than its latest winter test and more than double the discrepancy in its 2024 summer test.
  • What Car? highlighted rising UK temperatures as a factor in the findings’ relevance, noting recent 40°C readings and repeated heatwaves.
