Extratropical Cyclone Prompts Orange Alerts in Southern Brazil as Cold Front Spreads Storms

With the cyclone moving offshore, the cold front keeps the threat of heavy rain, damaging gusts and hail in place.

Overview

  • Inmet maintains orange-level storm warnings through Monday morning for Paraná, Santa Catarina and parts of Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo, with 50–100 mm/day of rain, 60–100 km/h wind gusts and hail risk.
  • A broader yellow alert covers areas of the Southeast, Center-West and North for 20–30 mm/h rain and 40–60 km/h winds as the front advances beyond the South.
  • Local civil defense agencies in São Paulo warn of squalls and possible hail statewide, with targeted alerts for the Vale do Paraíba and the South of Rio and Costa Verde valid until Tuesday morning.
  • Confirmed impacts include hail on Saturday in Sandovalina and Narandiba in western São Paulo and weather-related disruptions in the Federal District on Sunday, with DF remaining under a yellow alert.
  • Authorities advise avoiding shelter under trees, keeping vehicles away from signs and transmission towers, switching off electrical equipment during storms, and calling Civil Defense (199) or Fire Department (193) in emergencies.
