Overview

  • A Ramgarh court on Saturday declined Jharkhand ATS’s plea for police remand of Sunil Kumar alias Mayank Singh and sent him to judicial custody, with the agency planning to seek remand on Monday.
  • Kumar arrived in Mumbai on August 23 with a Jharkhand Police team following extradition from Baku and was brought to Ranchi, in what officials described as the force’s first successful extradition.
  • The accused is wanted in more than 50 cases across Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Punjab and is identified by agencies as a member of the Aman Sahu gang using the alias Mayank Singh.
  • Investigators allege he used WhatsApp to issue threats and demand money from business owners, coal transporters and railway contractors, including a 2022 case registered at Patratu police station.
  • CBI’s IPCU worked with Interpol’s NCB-Baku to geolocate him after a Red Notice on October 10, 2024, followed by an extradition request on January 7, 2025; probes have also reported links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
