Explosions, Fires and Major Roadworks Strain Dutch Services at Start of Holiday Rush

Police now say the cause of the Slotermeer flat fire remains unclear pending medical tests.

Overview

  • An explosive device detonated around 01:15 at a house on Hendrik Werkmanstraat in Almere, blowing out a window and damaging the door; no one was home and police are investigating.
  • A mobile phone exploded inside a home in Veenendaal, after which the device was thrown outside; a resident and two children were treated for smoke inhalation, according to the Veiligheidsregio Utrecht.
  • In the 6 October Slotermeer high‑rise fire, police retracted earlier certainty on suicide as the cause and report that medical research is underway; 17 of 127 apartments remain uninhabitable.
  • Extensive planned closures are in place, including a full A9 shutdown between Holendrecht and Badhoevedorp this weekend, A16 works near Rotterdam, a ten‑day A17 closure toward Roosendaal, and regional closures on the N210, N11 and N446 with signed detours.
  • Rijkswaterstaat expects a very heavy evening peak during the school break and maintenance period, forecasting up to about 500 kilometres of congestion on national roads and advising drivers to plan for delays.
