Experts Warn: Do Not Open the Bathroom Door Before the Window After a Shower

Brief shock ventilation with the window fully open clears steamy air quickly and curbs mold risk.

Overview

  • Humidity can spike above 80 percent right after showering, so open the window immediately, even while drying off.
  • Avoid opening the bathroom door first, which disperses moisture through the home and raises mold risk elsewhere.
  • Ventilate with the window wide open for about five to seven minutes, create cross-ventilation if possible, and switch off the heating while airing.
  • Keep the bathroom roughly 20–22°C and track humidity with a hygrometer, aiming near 40–60 percent, with some guidance allowing up to 50–70 percent.
  • Speed drying by squeegeeing or wiping wet surfaces and by regularly cleaning towels, mats, drains, seals, and vents; in winter, air the bathroom about twice daily for five to ten minutes.
