Experienced Hiker Dies in Extreme Weather in New Hampshire's White Mountains

Despite a large search and rescue operation, rescuers were unable to reach Christopher Roma due to severe whiteout conditions and high winds.

  • Christopher Roma, a 37-year-old experienced hiker, died while hiking solo in extreme weather conditions in New Hampshire's White Mountains.
  • Roma, who had previously hiked all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000 ft mountains and completed the 'Triple Crown' of challenging cross-country trails, was attempting to beat a personal best when he got caught in whiteout conditions with winds up to 80 miles per hour.
  • Despite a large search and rescue operation involving the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, Mountain Rescue Service, and the New Hampshire Army National Guard, rescuers were unable to reach Roma due to the severe weather conditions.
  • Roma's body was recovered by a helicopter on Thursday morning, saving what would have been a difficult carry-out for the 15 conservation officers and over 30 volunteers who were on their way to him.
  • A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to raise money for Roma's funeral expenses and to support his 2-year-old son, Solomon.
