Ex-White Sox Closer Bobby Jenks Dies at 44 After Stomach Cancer Battle

He moved to Sintra, Portugal, earlier this year to receive treatment for advanced adenocarcinoma near his wife’s family

Overview

  • Jenks passed away on July 4 in Sintra after a public fight with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, the White Sox announced.
  • White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf described him as “an iconic member of the White Sox family” whose performance in Game 4 of the 2005 World Series remains unforgettable.
  • He disclosed his stomach cancer diagnosis in February and relocated with his wife and children to Portugal to be closer to her relatives during treatment.
  • Over seven major league seasons, Jenks recorded 173 saves, posted a 3.53 ERA, earned All-Star nods in 2006 and 2007 and closed out the White Sox’s first title in 88 years.
  • He is survived by his wife, Eleni Tzitzivacos, their two children, Zeno and Kate, and four children from a prior marriage: Cuma, Nolan, Rylan and Jackson.
