Ex-Venezuelan spy chief extradited to US to face drug charges

  • Retired Venezuelan military intelligence chief Hugo Carvajal has been extradited from Spain to the US.
  • Carvajal is accused of coordinating cocaine shipments from Venezuela to Mexico and providing weapons to Colombian guerrillas.
  • He was arrested in Spain in 2019 and fought extradition until a court rejected his asylum claim in September 2021.
  • Carvajal was a close ally of Hugo Chávez but broke with Nicolás Maduro and opposed his government.
  • He is expected to appear in federal court in New York and plead not guilty to drug trafficking charges.
