Ex-Venezuelan spy chief extradited to US to face drug charges

Retired Venezuelan military intelligence chief Hugo Carvajal has been extradited from Spain to the US.
Carvajal is accused of coordinating cocaine shipments from Venezuela to Mexico and providing weapons to Colombian guerrillas.
He was arrested in Spain in 2019 and fought extradition until a court rejected his asylum claim in September 2021.
Carvajal was a close ally of Hugo Chávez but broke with Nicolás Maduro and opposed his government.
He is expected to appear in federal court in New York and plead not guilty to drug trafficking charges.
