Ex-Tenant Indicted in Gunpoint Robbery of 99-Year-Old Washington Heights Landlord

Prosecutors say Domingo Vasquez Rodriguez, extradited from Philadelphia, now faces burglary and robbery charges.

Overview

  • Manhattan D.A. announced an indictment charging Domingo Vasquez Rodriguez, 39, with first- and second-degree burglary, second-degree robbery, assault, and grand larceny.
  • Investigators say he posed as a package courier, forced a side gate, crushed Jose Antonio Tur’s hand in a struggle, pressed a gun to his back, and took $20,000 to $25,000 from a basement office cabinet.
  • Tur, 99, was hospitalized with hand injuries, suffered a stroke, and died on Oct. 8, according to police and his family.
  • Authorities say Rodriguez was arrested in Pennsylvania in late September after a tip and was returned to New York on Oct. 31 for court processing, with arraignment pending in Manhattan Criminal Court.
  • Prosecutors describe Rodriguez as Tur’s former tenant who allegedly owed more than $30,000 in rent before accepting $8,000 to leave and moving to Pennsylvania.
