Ex-Tabasco Security Chief Accused of Leading ‘La Barredora’ Kidnapping and Extortion Ring

Overview

  • A Tabasco judge issued arrest warrants on February 18 under cause penal 213/2025 charging Bermúdez and two alleged accomplices with organized crime, express kidnapping and extortion.
  • Prosecutors identify Bermúdez as the founder and leader of ‘La Barredora’ who allegedly orchestrated the abduction and extortion of gas station owner Ramón Martínez Armengol.
  • Bermúdez remains a fugitive after reportedly flying to Panamá the day the warrants were issued, and his co-accused Eduardo Vázquez Orellana and Manuel de Atocha Romero Hernández are also at large.
  • On February 28, the Fiscalía General de la República and the Mexican Army seized the Corporativo Paragas gas station in Villahermosa on suspicion of selling stolen fuel.
  • In July, the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera blocked bank accounts belonging to Bermúdez, his relatives and linked companies on money-laundering allegations.
