Ex Rome Police Official Tells Lawmakers Minardi Alleged De Pedis Kidnapped Orlandi on Marcinkus’s Orders

A former Rome police official told lawmakers she recorded the late Sabrina Minardi’s claim tying Renato De Pedis to Paul Marcinkus in the 1983 case.

Overview

  • Speaking to a parliamentary commission on September 11, ex–Mobile Squad deputy Giovanna Petrocca recounted statements she collected from Sabrina Minardi in 2008.
  • Petrocca said Minardi described a handoff in Rome involving a Renault 5, a BMW, and a final transfer to a priest waiting by a dark Mercedes after a drive along a winding road.
  • Minardi allegedly claimed the abduction was carried out by Banda della Magliana figure Enrico (Renato) De Pedis on instructions from Paul Marcinkus, then head of the Vatican bank.
  • Petrocca cautioned that Minardi was in frail psychological health when interviewed and that her account requires corroboration.
  • The session also referenced prior witness material, including a 2008 identification of De Pedis associate Marco Sarnataro by a friend of Orlandi, as the commission continues its review of the unresolved case.
