Ex-PRI Candidate Javier López Zavala Sentenced to 60 Years for Feminicide of Cecilia Monzón

State officials plan his transfer to a federal maximum-security prison over security risks at Puebla’s San Miguel facility.

Overview

  • A Puebla tribunal gave Zavala and co-defendants Jair “N” and Silvestre “N” the maximum 60-year term for the 2022 killing of the lawyer and activist.
  • Each defendant also received a fine of 1,000 UMAs, roughly 113,000 pesos, according to the sentencing.
  • Prosecutors established that Zavala ordered the attack, supplied the firearm, his nephew Jair recruited Silvestre, and the pair carried out the shooting on a motorcycle.
  • The panel delivered the sentence on Dec. 31 after finding Zavala guilty on Dec. 23, concluding a trial that spanned more than eight months with about 80 hearings.
  • Puebla’s security chief said the convicted ex-politician will be moved to a federal facility, likely Altiplano, while noting the defense could pursue an amparo.
