Ex-Partner Alleges Grooming as Manchester Synagogue Attack Investigation Widens

Investigators have extended detentions under terrorism laws during a watchdog review of the shooting.

Overview

  • A former partner says Jihad Al-Shamie groomed her, pushed extremist views, made her watch violent propaganda, sent abusive messages through a banking app, and assaulted her during their brief relationship.
  • Counter-terrorism police secured warrants of further detention for four suspects — a 30-year-old man, a 61-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man from Prestwich, and a 46-year-old woman from Farnworth — for up to five additional days.
  • An 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man arrested in Farnworth remain in custody for questioning on suspicion of terrorism offenses.
  • The police watchdog is assessing whether officers’ gunfire may have caused or contributed to one victim’s death during the response.
  • Witnesses say Al-Shamie circled the synagogue before returning, ramming the gate and a guard with his car, and attacking with a knife as congregants barricaded doors; two worshippers — Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53 — were killed and four others injured before armed officers shot the attacker dead.
