Ex-Midshipman Charged Over Online Threat That Locked Down Naval Academy

Federal prosecutors say a social media threat sent from Indiana to Maryland triggered their interstate-communication charge.

Overview

  • Jackson Elliot Fleming, 23, of Chesterton, Indiana, a former member of the Naval Academy’s Class of 2025, was arrested Friday and charged by complaint with transmitting a threat in interstate communication.
  • Prosecutors announced the case Tuesday, said the charge carries a maximum five-year sentence, and set a detention hearing for next week.
  • Officials said the online post prompted a lockdown at the Annapolis campus, and a Navy spokesman confirmed there was no active shooter.
  • During a sweep of Bancroft Hall, a midshipman struck a security officer with a parade rifle and was shot and wounded, and both were treated and released.
  • The FBI and NCIS are conducting a joint investigation with assistance from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office, while Fleming’s attorney says he will vigorously contest the accusation.
