Ex-Mayor Alfonso Miranda Gallegos Sentenced to 82 Years for Organized Crime, Drug Offenses and Kidnapping

The decision caps a seven-year case built on federal evidence linking him to Los Rojos, including a 2013 kidnapping in Amacuzac.

Overview

  • Mexico’s Sixth District Judge in Coahuila, based in La Laguna, issued the sentence after the federal prosecutor presented corroborating evidence.
  • The conviction covers organized crime in the drugs context plus kidnapping and aggravated kidnapping, and includes a MXN 1,225,910 fine.
  • The FGR says Miranda Gallegos was an active member of Los Rojos and took part in a June 2013 abduction in Amacuzac, Morelos.
  • He was arrested on May 6, 2018, held at CPS-Durango, won the July 1, 2018 mayoral election from jail, never took office, and was reported to direct municipal matters by phone.
  • He is the uncle of Los Rojos leader Santiago “El Carrete” Mazari, who was sentenced in 2023, and the group’s presence in Amacuzac has been cited in coverage that also notes its mention as a rival in Ayotzinapa case narratives.
