Overview

• Melquiades Alarcón Caro, a former PRI–PVEM mayor (2018–2021), and one of his sons were attacked while traveling between Zomelahuacan and Pueblo Nuevo Thursday morning.
• A 9:22 a.m. emergency call led municipal police to the scene, after which state and ministerial forces mounted an operation to locate those responsible.
• Security and forensic teams cordoned the area, opened a homicide case file and transferred the bodies to the forensic medical service.
• Authorities reported no arrests and the Veracruz government had not issued a public statement as of late Thursday.
• The killings rattled residents who recalled the January disappearance and later death of another son, Rigoberto Alarcón Tapia.
