Ex-Indian Official Charged in US Assassination Plot

Vikash Yadav, a former Indian intelligence officer, is accused of orchestrating a foiled murder-for-hire scheme targeting Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York.

The plot allegedly involved hiring Nikhil Gupta, who was extradited from the Czech Republic, to recruit a hitman, who turned out to be a US law enforcement informant.
Yadav was previously arrested in Delhi on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder but was released on bail earlier this year.
The case has strained US-India relations and has drawn comparisons to the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Indian authorities have stated that Yadav is no longer a government employee, and the US is expected to seek his extradition.
