Ex-Colombian Army Officer Sentenced to Life for Involvement in Assassination of Haitian President

Germán Alejandro Rivera García, also known as "Colonel Mike," the second of eleven charged in Jovenel Moïse's assassination case, has possibility of reduced sentence under cooperation agreement with U.S. authorities.

  • Germán Alejandro Rivera García, a former Colombian army officer known as 'Colonel Mike', has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Rivera was part of a convoy that was sent to Moïse's residence with the intention to kill the president.
  • Rivera is the second of 11 people charged in the multinational murder plot, which U.S. prosecutors have described as a conspiracy formed in both Haiti and Florida to kidnap or kill Moïse.
  • Details reveal Rivera communicated to the hired mercenaries the change of plans from kidnapping to assassinating the Haitian president. The investigation alleges that the plotters hoped to secure contracts under Moïse's successor.
  • Despite the life sentence, there is a possibility that Rivera's sentence could be reduced in the future due to a cooperation agreement he has signed with U.S. authorities, usually applicable if the convict assists in the investigation.
  • In the ongoing investigation, over 40 suspects, including 18 former Colombian soldiers, remain detained in Haiti for over two years since the assassination of President Moïse.
