Ex-CFMEU NSW Leaders Jailed for Cash Bribes

A NSW judge ordered prison terms to deter abuse of union power under post–royal commission corruption laws.

Overview

  • Darren Greenfield was ordered to serve at least 10 months in custody, with maximum terms of 18 months from Friday and 24 months from May 2026, followed by release on a $500 bond and good behaviour conditions.
  • Michael Greenfield received a minimum six months in jail on a maximum 18-month term, with identical bond and good behaviour requirements upon release.
  • Prosecutors said Darren accepted four cash payments totalling $20,000 between November 2018 and June 2020, while Michael took two payments totalling $10,000 in 2019.
  • Judge Leonie Flannery said the pair used the union’s influence for personal benefit, ruling that no penalty other than imprisonment was appropriate and noting this as the first sentencing of union officials under 2017 Fair Work Act corruption offences.
  • Michael also admitted signing a false statutory declaration to dodge demerit points for running a red light and received a two-year community corrections order for that offence, as the CFMEU continues under external administration after separate scrutiny in 2024.
