Ex-Campton Hills Police Chief, 3 Officers Indicted in Alleged Evidence-Room Gun Sales

The defendants were released under court-ordered restrictions because the charges are not detainable under Illinois law.

Overview

  • A Kane County grand jury unsealed indictments Thursday naming former Chief Steven Millar, former officers Scott Coryell and Daniel Hatt, and current officer Douglas Kucik.
  • Prosecutors allege firearms held in the department evidence room were unlawfully sold between January 2018 and February 2023, with reports falsified or amended to facilitate the sales and obstruct investigators.
  • Millar faces 41 counts including money laundering, forgery, official misconduct, theft, wire fraud and firearm-delivery violations, while the others face combinations of forgery, official misconduct, theft, wire fraud, money laundering and obstruction of justice.
  • Illinois State Police led a years-long investigation and submitted evidence to the Kane County State’s Attorney, who announced the charges after the probe concluded.
  • All four surrendered and appeared in court, then were released with bans on possessing firearms, contacting co-defendants or traveling out of state, with a next court date set for December 12.
