Overview
- Robert James Purkiss, 38, was arrested by National Crime Agency specialist officers on Nov. 6 after Kenya sought his extradition on a murder charge.
- He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Nov. 7, said he would contest transfer to Kenya, and was denied bail with a further hearing set for Nov. 14.
- Prosecutors told the court colleagues reported confessions, quoting Purkiss as saying “I’ve killed her” and “it was sex that went wrong,” and that he showed a soldier a body in a septic tank.
- The court heard of 2018 Facebook messages referencing the Nanyuki hotel and septic tank to which Purkiss allegedly replied with a smiling emoji; a post-mortem noted a stab wound and that Wanjiru may have been alive when dumped.
- Defense lawyer David Josse KC said Purkiss vehemently denies the allegation and has Ministry of Defence funding for his legal costs; a 2018 inquest had concluded Wanjiru was murdered by British soldiers.
