Ex-Boyfriend Arrested After Ukrainian Refugee and U.S. Soldier Killed in North Carolina Home

Investigators say he drove from Ohio before breaking into the residence, forcing a child to lead him to the victims.

Overview

  • Kateryna Tovmash, 21, a Ukrainian refugee, and Matthew Wade, 28, an active-duty U.S. Army servicemember, were found fatally shot on Feb. 14 in Vass, North Carolina.
  • Authorities identified the suspect as Tovmash’s former boyfriend, Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh, 25, who was arrested in Ohio later the same day.
  • Fosnaugh faces charges of breaking and entering and two counts of first-degree murder as Moore County detectives continue an active investigation.
  • Deputies say the attacker unlawfully entered the home, woke the children, and compelled a boy to take him to his sister’s room before opening fire.
  • The killings mark the second fatal attack on a Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina within a year, following the August 2025 stabbing of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte.
