Ex-Army Warrant Officer Pleads Guilty to Sexually Assaulting Soldier Jaysley Beck

The plea follows an inquest that found the Army’s failure to report her complaint to police contributed to the 19-year-old gunner’s death.

Overview

  • Michael Webber admitted one count of sexual assault at a pre-trial hearing at the Bulford Court Martial Centre and will be sentenced on October 31, 2025.
  • Beck reported that Webber pinned her down, tried to kiss her, and put his hand between her legs during a July 2021 training stay on Thorney Island.
  • At the time, the incident was logged internally as inappropriate behaviour rather than reported to police, and Webber received only a minor administrative interview.
  • A February coroner’s ruling said Army failings more than minimally contributed to Beck’s death and that her complaint should have been referred to the police.
  • After the inquest, Wiltshire Police sent a file to the Service Prosecuting Authority, leading to the charge, as Beck’s family welcomed the guilty plea and continued to criticise the Army’s handling and culture.
