EVs Reach Record 18.4% of South Korea’s August Car Sales

Recent model debuts from leading automakers fueled the surge.

Overview

  • Electric vehicles accounted for 23,269 of 126,787 new registrations in August, the highest share since Carisyou began tracking in 2020.
  • January–August EV registrations totaled 141,986 for a 12.7% share, with cumulative volumes up 48.4% from the same period in 2024.
  • Imported EVs captured 39.7% of imported car sales in August, more than double their share a year earlier, according to KAIDA.
  • New offerings from Hyundai and Kia, alongside releases from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, underpinned the rebound in demand.
  • Industry observers expect annual EV sales to top 200,000 for the first time this year as subsidies are used faster than last year, with over 70% of the budget spent by July.
