Overview
- On September 1, 2026 CDU lead candidate Stefan Evers publicly proposed introducing a Verfassungstreue-Check for senators, state secretaries, district mayors and councillors to be applied after the September 20 Berlin election.
- Evers says the check would use Verfassungsschutz data to identify signs of right-wing, left-wing or Islamist extremist commitment and bar those with such indications from becoming civil servants.
- The model follows Brandenburg’s program, which has run since September 2024 and generated almost 2,200 formal inquiries through the end of 2025 with the Verfassungsschutz passing findings to hiring authorities in two cases.
- Evers also calls for strengthening the Verfassungsschutz with more powers, but implementing the check in Berlin would require administrative rules or new legislation and political agreement.
- If adopted the measure would focus first on high-responsibility posts and apply to probationary, fixed-term and lifetime appointments with checks repeated after each election, a step that could change who gains access to senior public office.
