Evernote Restricts Free Users to 50 Notes and One Notebook

The change, effective from December 4, may push users to consider alternatives with more generous free plans.

  • Evernote is limiting free users to 50 notes and one notebook starting December 4, a change that the company has been testing.
  • Existing free users who exceed these limits can still view, edit, delete, and export their notes, but they'll need to upgrade to a paid plan or delete enough old ones to create new notes.
  • Evernote's premium plans, which are now practically essential for anything more than minimal use, include a $15 monthly Personal plan with 10GB of monthly uploads, and an $18 tier that doubles the upload limit to 20GB.
  • Evernote's parent company, Bending Spoons, moved its operations from the US and Chile to Europe earlier this year, laying off nearly all of the note-taking app's employees.
  • The company has acknowledged that these changes may lead users to reconsider their relationship with Evernote, with alternatives like Notion, Microsoft OneNote, Google Keep, Bear, Obsidian, and SimpleNote offering more generous free plans.
